Tie2, also known as TEK Receptor Tyrosine Kinase (TEK), belongs to the tyrosine kinase family that mediates a signaling pathway that functions in embryonic vascular development. As a cell-surface receptor, Tie2 regulates angiogenesis, endothelial cell survival, proliferation, migration, and is required for normal heart development during embryogenesis. Tie2 has also been shown to play a critical role in maintaining the long-term population and quiescent status of hematopoietic stem cells in bone marrow. Overexpression of Tie2 in tumoral vessels as well as outside the vascular compartment has been linked to several types of cancers including leukemia, gastric tumors, breast tumors, and gliomas. Tie2 is a potential target for cancer therapy due to its expression in different tumoral compartments.
