HDAC6 is a distinct member of the histone deacetylase family, primarily found in the cytoplasm. Unlike other HDACs it targets non-histone proteins. HDAC6 regulates cell motility by deacetylating α-tubulin and helps degrade misfolded proteins through autophagy. Additionally, HDAC6 influences stress responses and immune signaling by modulating acetylation of key regulatory proteins. Due to its versatile roles, HDAC6 is a promising drug target with potential therapeutic applications in cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and immune disorders.
