Background

MMP9 (matrix metalloproteinase 9), also known as Gelatinase B, is a member of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family involved in the degradation of the extracellular matrix. Abnormal expression of MMP9 is observed in many diseases, including cancer and coronary artery disease. The (Q279R) mutation, found within the fibronectin type II domain, is associated with increased risk for in-transit metastasis.
