Background

Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is a cytokine secreted by activated T lymphocytes to stimulate the proliferation of both B and T cells. IL-2 is involved in the extreme inflammation response termed “cytokine storm” observed following viral infection in susceptible patients or following adaptive cell therapy. Thus, it is considered a therapeutic target for the treatment of severe COVID-19. IL-2 acts by binding to a membrane heterotrimeric receptor consisting of IL-2 receptor alpha (IL2RA, also known as CD25) and beta (IL2RB, also known as CD122) chains, which together with the common gamma chain (IL2RG) form a high-affinity receptor, whereas IL-2RA homodimers form a low-affinity receptor. Polymorphisms in the genes coding for IL2RA and IL2RB may be associated with risk of lung cancer.
