Background
Monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL) catalyzes hydrolysis of intracellular triglyceride stores, forming fatty acids and glycerol. It is a key enzyme in the metabolism of 2-arachidonoylglycerol, hence is involved in a similar pathway to DAGL. MAGL is localized in the enteric nervous system where it functions to regulate levels of endocannabinoids, and as a result, regulates intestinal motility. It is also found in the gut epithelium where it may have a role in digestion.
