Background
Otubain 2 is a member of the OTU (ovarian tumor) superfamily of ubiquitin isopeptidases. It was originally identified as a protein capable of binding ubiquitin aldehyde. Researchers have shown that it is able to cleave tetra-ubiquitin chains in vitro only after removal of a 5 residue C-terminal extension.
